Launch of the Titanic

The hull of the infamous Titanic was launched on 31 May 1911, with the outfitting of the ship completed by 31 March 1912. RMS Titanic set off on her maiden voyage from Southampton, England on 10 April 1912, bound for New York City, with Captain Edward J. Smith in command.

Titanic was designed by Lord Pirrie, Thomas Andrews and Alexander Carlisle. It was built at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Construction began on 31 March 1909 and was funded by the International Mercantile Marine Co. owned by the American J.P. Morgan.

Owned by White Star Line, Titanic  was the largest passenger steamship in the world when she set off on her maiden voyage with 2,223 people on board. On 14 April 1912, four days into the trip, the "unsinkable ship" struck an iceberg and sank, killing 1,517 people.
