Clare College, Cambridge, England

Clare College is a college of the University of Cambridge in Cambridge, England. It was founded in 1326 by the university's Chancellor, Richard de Badew, and was originally named University Hall. It is the University of Cambridge's second-oldest surviving college after Peterhouse.

Following a period of financial difficulties, the college was refounded in 1338 as Clare Hall by the granddaughter of Edward I, Elizabeth de Clare. It was known as Clare Hall until 1856, when its name was changed to Clare College.

Clare Bridge is the oldest surviving bridge in Cambridge and connects Old Court to Memorial Court across River Cam. It is an arched stone bridge with fourteen stone balls decorating it. One of the balls has a section missing, leading to much speculation of how this occurred.

Blarney Castle, County Cork, Ireland

Blarney Castle, known as Caisleán na Blarnan in Irish, is a medieval castle in Blarney, County Cork, Ireland. It was originally a timber lodge built in the 10th century, and was then replaced by a stone castle in 1210.

The current castle dates from 1446 and was built by the King of Munster, Dermot McCarthy. Blarney Castle continued to be the ancestral stronghold of the McCarthy family until the arrival of Oliver Cromwell in 1646. Then in 1661 the Castle was returned to the McCarthy family when King Charles II became King of England.

Once again the McCarthys were forced to leave Blarney Castle following the Battle of the Boyne in 1690 when all Irish chiefs were stripped of their powers. The Castle is now owned and managed by the Trustees of the Blarney Castle Estate.

The Blarney Stone, called Cloch na Blarnan in Irish, is a block of bluestone which was set into the tower of Blarney Castle in 1446 when the castle was built.
The stone is believed to be half of the Stone of Scone which originally belonged to Scotland. Robert the Bruce gave the stone to Cormac McCarthy in 1314 for his support in the Battle of Bannockburn. Scottish Kings were crowned over the Stone of Scone because it was believed to have special powers.

According to legend, a person who kisses the Blarney Stone is endowed with the gift of the gab. The stone is also known as the Stone of Eloquence.

Babelsberg Palace, Potsdam, Germany

Babelsberg Palace is situated in Babelsberg - a district in Potsdam, the capital of the German state of Brandenburg. The palace was located on the slope of the Babelsberg hill, which overlooked Havel River.

The palace was built as a summer residence for Prince William of Hohenzollern and his spouse, Augusta of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. In 1833, the prince was given approval to proceed with the palace by his father, King Frederick William III of Prussia.

Initially the palace was designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel in a Neo-Gothic style. However, Prince William had become the Prussian Crown Prince due to his elder brother, King Frederick Willian IV, not having any children. This resulted in the plans of the palace being extended by Friedrich Ludwig Persius and was finally finished in 1849.

After William’s accession to the Prussian and German throne, he continued to use Babelsberg Palace as a summer residence. On 23 September 1862, he appointed Otto von Bismark as the Minister President of Prussia in Babelsberg Palace.

Arnhem on the Rhine, Netherlands

Arnhem is a city in the province of Gelderland in the eastern part of the Netherlands, which has a rich history of early human inhabitants.

The oldest archaelogical findings near Arnhem are two firestones which are dated as coming from 70,000 years ago. During the Stone Age, the Neanderthals lived in this part of Europe.

Tracks of a hunter's camp dating from 5000 BC have been discovered as well as 12 grave hills dating from 2400 BC, providing evidence of the development of agricultural communities to the area.

Traces of the earliest settlements in Arnhem have been found and date from 1500 BC on the Hoogkamp, from 700 BC around St Jansbeek, and from 500 BC south of the Rhine.

Arnhem was not originally built on the banks of the Rhine, but was built along the St Jansbeek. In 1530, the flow of the Rhine was changed, which resulted in the city being located on the river.

In the 19th century, Arnhem was a famous resort town due to its beauty. It was also called the Hague of the East due to the number of former sugar barons and planters who settles there from the Indies, which was similar to what had occurred in The Hague.

San Remo Harbour, Liguria, Italy

Sanremo (or San Remo) is on the Mediterranean coast of Liguria in north-western Italy and is argubly the most well-known city on the Italian Riviera.

The town was originally founded as a Roman settlement, known as Matuzia. In the early Middle Ages, the population of the town moved to the high grounds, where the walled village of La Pigna was built to protect the town from Saracen raids. Much of this old town survives today.

Throughout history, control of San Remo has changed hands a number of times. It was under the control of the countship of Ventimiglia, then under the dominion of the Genoese bishops. In 1927, it was sold to the Doria and De Mari families.

In the 15th century, it became a free town and remained independent for a long time. In the 18th century, it was successful against the attempts of the Genoese Republic to once again control the town.

Sanremo came under French control under the House of Savoy and was annexed to the Kingdom of Sardinia. In 1961, the Kingdom of Sardinia became the founding state for the new Kingdom of Italy.

Since the middle of the 18th century, Sanremo has been a popular tourist destination and was known to be visited by many notable people.

Lisdoonvarna, County Clare, Ireland

Lisdoonvarna is a spa town in County Clare, Ireland. The name in Irish, Lios Dúin Bhearna, means enclosure at the fort by the gap. It is believed that the town takes its name from the earthen fort of Lissateeaun (fort of the fairy hill) which is 3 kilmetres north-east of the town.

Prior to the early nineteenth century, there were only a few scattered cottages in the area. The town was established following the discovery of the beneficial effect of the mineral waters, which are rich in iron, sulphur, magnesium and calcium. Lisdoonvarna continue to be an active spa town to this day.

There are a number of archaelogical sites which provide evidence that people have inhabited the area for many centuries prior to the town being established. There are a number of ring forts which date from the Iron Age through to the Christian era and up to the late medieval times.

Bayeux Cathedral in Bayeux, France

Bayeux Cathedral, known as Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Bayeux in French, is located in the town of Bayeux. The Cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of Bayeux and is a national monument of France.

The Cathedral was built in the Norman-Romanesque style and was consecrated on 14 July 1077. William, Duke of Normandy and King of England (also more polularly known as William the Conqueror), was present at the consecration.

It is believed that on this site William the Conqueror forced Harold Godwinson to take an oath to support William's claim to the English throne. On 5 January 1066, Harold was crowned King of England, breaking his oath, which led to the Norman conquest of England.

The Cathedral was the original home of Bayeux Tapestry, an embroidered cloth rather than a tapestry, which shows the events leading up to the Norman conquest of England and the invasion itself. The tapestry is 0.5 metres high by 68.38 metres long. The tapestry is now exhibited in a museum in Bayeux, the Musée de la Tapisserie de Bayeux. There is also a replica, created in the Victorian era, which is shown in Reading, England.

The site of the cathedral is known to be an ancient religious site and had previously been occupied by Roman sancturies.
